Whiplash Injuries

Whiplash is a common injury which occurs following a sudden jarring motion or impact to the body. The head snaps forward then back, like a whip being cracked. Many injury victims will experience immediate neck pain following an accident. Some victims will have a burst of adrenaline following an accident which temporarily masks their pain, only to have it surface later.

Perhaps you walked away from an accident with just a few bruises and, overall, you felt okay. Then suddenly you started feeling back and neck pain. You may even have difficulty concentrating or experience headaches that are not typical for you. If over-the-counter pain medication doesn’t decrease your symptoms, it is possible you have a whiplash injury from the accident.

During our decades of practice, the attorneys at Meshbesher Law Firm have helped hundreds of whiplash victims get the help they need. You should not have to pay out of pocket for medical expenses that you did nothing to cause. If your whiplash injury occurred at work or was the result of an accident someone else caused, we can help.

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a spine injury to the soft tissues of the neck. This means that ligaments, joints, and neck and shoulder muscles are damaged. It is important to seek medical attention if you have a neck injury because the symptoms will likely continue to worsen over time if untreated.

Some people denigrate this injury as “just whiplash” not understanding how much pain the car accident victim is in. Some people who think they have “just whiplash” may actually have a herniated disc in their neck which could require immediate medical care.

The symptoms of whiplash include:

  • Dizziness
  • Back pain
  • Balance issues
  • Headache
  • Difficulty remembering simple things
  • Pain in the neck or neck stiffness
  • Prickling or burning sensation
  • Pain in the shoulder

Recovery

Most patients are able to recover from mild whiplash within four months. However, more serious cases can take up to a year to resolve. Typical medical treatment includes chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy and massage. The doctor may require cervical traction in order to get back full function of the neck.

Some people do not recover to their preaccident medical condition following their accident. Even after the whiplash healing process should be complete, it is still possible to experience headaches and neck pain for a long time postaccident. Some whiplash sufferers will continue to treat long past the date that any such treatment is helpful in the hopes that their very real pain will disappear.
